Medicare and GLP-1 Coverage: What to Know
A new Medicare program will make certain GLP-1 medications more affordable for eligible people with Medicare Part D. Here’s a quick look at what’s changing, who may qualify, and what to keep in mind.
What’s changing
Starting July 1, 2026, Medicare will begin the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary CMS demonstration program that runs through December 31, 2027. The program is designed for eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries using certain GLP-1 drugs for weight loss.
How it works
Eligible beneficiaries pay a flat $50 copay for a monthly supply of covered GLP-1 drugs through the Bridge. The program works outside the usual Medicare Part D coverage and payment flow, so the Part D deductible does not apply.
Who qualifies
To be eligible, beneficiaries generally need Medicare Part D coverage, receive prior authorization, and meet certain weight-related criteria. The Bridge is only for weight-loss use.
A few things to know
Covered drugs are limited. The $50 copay does not count toward true out-of-pocket costs and low-income subsidy assistance does not apply to the Bridge copay. Coupons and discount programs cannot be used for Bridge claims.
