Squash the Medicare Scams
Keep your Medicare number and personal information safe.
Heartless scammers use unsolicited calls, emails, and offers of free or discounted services to try to steal your Medicare number, bank details, or other personal information for fraudulent claims or identity theft.
Common Medicare scams include:
New Medicare Card
Swindlers claim you need a new or upgraded card and ask for your Medicare number or financial info to “verify” your account. They might threaten to cancel your benefits. Do not provide your information.
Free or Discounted Services
Fraudsters promise free medical equipment, genetic testing, or rebates to get your Medicare number and bank details. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Unsolicited Calls and Emails
Swindlers impersonate Medicare employees, asking for personal information or pressuring you to enroll in a new plan. Hang up immediately or delete the email.
Protect Yourself
Never give out your Medicare number or personal info to unsolicited callers.
Be wary of offers for free or discounted services requiring your Medicare number.
Report suspected Medicare fraud to Medicare.gov or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Your Medicare benefits cannot be canceled, and if you are concerned by someone contacting you about your Medicare, hang up and verify by contacting the Center for Medicare Services or Via Benefits to confirm.
By staying informed, cautious, and vigilant, you can protect yourself from Medicare scams.
